After more than a decade of planning and preparation, including constructing a new boathouse and dock, and accruing rowing equipment (shells, oars, a motorized launch boat, etc.), BCR saw its efforts squelched on July 7 when the Brockport Village Board voted to terminate the five-year permit between the Village and BCR, and discontinue construction on the nearly completed boathouse. After considerable pushback from the public and other entities, the Village Board reconsidered its earlier actions and allowed BCR to operate through October and approved completion of the boathouse.

With permission to operate out of the newly completed boathouse, BCR began its first season with a Learn to Row Day in early August, when 35 participants crewed for the very first time. This was followed by an eight-session Learn to Row Program with 16 beginners. Interest in the program was overwhelming; twice as many people signed up than the boats could hold. In September and October, BCR operated an Intermediate Rowing Program at full capacity with 16 rowers. Last month, two boatloads rowed in the Drain the Ditch Fund Row. In addition to rowing, dozens participated in yoga programs and rowing-machine workouts at the boathouse. All of these events were open to the public.

BCR has grown to over 120 members, and the organization exists due to the efforts of dozens of individuals: volunteers, donors, coxswains, and coaches who worked tirelessly to get the operation up and running. Despite the rocky start, BCR’s first season on the canal was a success, and public support has been exceptional. Rowers, from novice to experienced, were finally able to row in Brockport.

Behind the scenes, BCR and the Village have been working to establish a permit that is satisfactory to both sides. At the time of this writing (December 16), they have not been able to establish an agreement allowing BCR to operate from the boathouse beyond March 2026. After a highly successful first season, not to mention a decade of investment and preparation, it would be unfortunate if BCR were not able to operate next season. Even though the canal is currently closed, BCR needs the off-season to prepare its equipment and plan for next year. With so much public interest, BCR intends to increase its programming when the canal reopens in the spring. However, it first needs permission from the Village.

Hawk Sports Hall of Fame https://westsidenewsny.com/news/2025-12-19/hawk-sports-hall-of-fame/ Fri, 19 Dec 2025 16:18:58 +0000 https://westsidenewsny.com/?p=110786 1964 & 1965 Basketball Teams Inducted

Holley Central School District, in partnership with the Holley Sports Boosters, inducted the 1964 and 1965 varsity boys basketball teams into the Hawks Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, December 12. Many former players and their families attended the event.

These two teams hold a special place in Holley history as the only Section V championship winners for boys basketball in the school’s history. The 1962 team reached the finals but lost to Avon.

1964 Varsity Boys Basketball Team

Players: Tim Persia, Mike Barber, Wally Sanford, Rick Harter, Greg Forgione, Ronnie Jewell, John DeBaun, Wayne McClelland, Earl Gallop, and Nick Long.

Accomplishments:

In a thrilling championship game, Greg Forgione sank two foul shots with one second remaining to defeat Clifton Springs 61-60 and secure the title.

First team in school history to win a Section V Class B Championship, finishing with a 17-5 record. At the time, only 16 teams qualified for the Section V tournament (compared to today, where all teams are eligible). There were only five classifications: AA, A, B, C, and D.

On their way to the championship, Holley defeated Hammondsport, with Tim Persia scoring a record 50 points—a sectional record that stood for many years.

They went on to defeat Dundee and Honeoye Falls to reach the finals.

1965 Varsity Boys Basketball Team

Players: Nick Long, David Epke, Paul Sanford, Nick Penna, Larry McCall, Wayne McClelland, Wally Sanford, Mike Barber, and Tim Persia.

Accomplishments:

  • The second Holley team to win a Section V Class B Championship, finishing with a 19-3 record.
  • Their only losses were to Oakfield-Alabama (twice) and Churchville-Chili in a Christmas tournament.
  • On their way to the championship, Holley defeated Letchworth, Hammondsport, and Livonia.
  • In the championship game, Holley defeated Williamson 53-43.

North Chili’s Ben Hinds makes Section V history with state meet qualification in every event https://westsidenewsny.com/sports/2025-02-02/north-chilis-ben-hinds-makes-section-v-history-with-state-meet-qualification-in-every-event/ Sun, 02 Feb 2025 12:45:00 +0000 https://westsidenewsny.com/?p=102721 Ben Hinds, a standout swimmer from North Chili and a junior at McQuaid Jesuit, has officially made Section V history. During a meet at Penfield High School on January 23, Ben secured his final state qualification in the 500-yard freestyle, making him the first junior – or younger – in Section V history to qualify for every individual event at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Meet.

Ben Hinds

Ben delivered an incredible performance, completing the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.42, besting his USA Swimming time from the weekend by another two seconds. His time is more than four seconds faster than the state qualifying standard, showcasing his exceptional talent and competitive drive. This extraordinary accomplishment has only been achieved once before in Section V history – by Cam Stetzer of Pittsford in 2024, who completed the feat as a senior. Ben now joins this elite group and has cemented his place as one of the top swimmers in the region.

In addition to his high school accomplishments, Ben trains year-round with the Webster BlueFins USA Swimming team, where he has developed the endurance, discipline, and skills that have propelled him to the top of his sport. He has already qualified in every other individual event and participated in all three relay teams. His 400 Freestyle Relay team is currently ranked first in New York State.

The McQuaid team continues to build momentum heading into Sectionals and looks to defend their Section V Class B Championship title from last year.
