Local Student Advances to State Finals in American Legion Oratorical Contest
A junior and homeschooled student from Hilton is making an impressive run in this year’s American Legion Oratorical Contest.
Christopher Lucas has earned top honors at multiple levels of competition, winning the Monroe County contest, advancing through the district competition representing several counties, and most recently capturing the Zone Championship. With these victories, Christopher has secured his place in the American Legion Department of New York Finals, scheduled for March 6–7, where he will compete against the best student speakers from across the state.
The Oratorical Contest, often referred to as the American Legion’s “Constitutional Speech Contest,” challenges students to demonstrate a deep understanding of the U.S. Constitution through a prepared oration and an assigned topic discourse. Both portions must be delivered to qualify for advancement and awards.
Monroe County’s Oratorical Chairman, Colonel (Ret.) Ken Juergens of Churchville’s Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954, praised Christopher’s dedication and skill.
“Christopher has shown exceptional poise, preparation, and understanding of constitutional principles throughout each level of competition,” Juergens said. “He represents the very best of what this program is designed to encourage—citizenship, leadership, and an appreciation for our nation’s founding ideals.”
Students competing in the Department Finals are eligible for significant scholarships provided by the Department of New York. Awards are presented as follows: $6,000 for first place, $4,000 for second place, $2,500 for third place, and $2,000 for fourth and fifth place.
To receive these scholarships, finalists must deliver both their prepared speech and assigned topic address. Scholarship funds may be used at any high school (tuition only), college, or university in the United States and can cover tuition, books, supplies, room and board, and related educational fees. Funds remain available for seven years and are paid directly to the educational institution upon request.
At the Zone level, students also compete for awards, with prizes of $1,000 for first place, $800 for second place, and $500 for third and fourth place. These awards are granted by the Department of New York and remain with the recipients regardless of advancement to higher levels of competition. Similar awards are given at the County and District level.
The American Legion Oratorical Contest is open to 7th–12th grade students and offers the opportunity to compete for college scholarships right here in the Monroe County area. Students develop and deliver prepared and assigned speeches on the U.S. Constitution while building confidence, public speaking skills, and civic knowledge. Those interested in learning more or participating may call 585-293-1364 and leave a voicemail for a return call.
The Department also provides travel and lodging for finalists and their chaperones attending the state competition.
Christopher’s success highlights both his personal commitment to civic education and the continued strength of the American Legion’s youth programs, which aim to foster informed citizenship and public speaking skills among high school students.
Community members throughout Monroe County and the surrounding region will be watching with pride as Christopher Lucas represents the area at the state finals.
